Fern dedicated her life to children. She went above and beyond the normal realm of responsibility to make sure any child, regardless of whether they were her own, was comfortable and wanted for nothing. In addition to being an amazing mother to her two children, now adults, she helped manage a local children’s’ birthday party business, Little Chefs.
Education, learning and being prepared for school were of the utmost importance to Fern. She took great pride and enjoyment in going back-to-school shopping with her kids and always made sure that they were stocked up on the best supplies for the entire year. She was always on the lookout for new and interesting pens and notebooks and made sure they were well-equipped for any obstacle that comes in the way of a school age child. Her lists for all of the “necessities” required to send a freshman off to college have been circulated amongst many local mothers
In addition to Fern’s love of learning and being prepared for school, reading was near and dear to her heart. While raising her two children, she made it a point to read to them every night. When her kids were old enough, she required them to spend significant time reading on their own. Fern’s love for reading extended beyond her home, she ran the school book fair at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset, NY, for several years and ran the book section of a local children’s learning store. Fern paid many visits to Robbins Lane, often donating old books for the benefit of current students long after her sons graduated. To this day she had kept in touch with many of the teachers from Robbins Lane.
In February of 2013, Fern was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She quickly underwent surgery and numerous treatments to defeat the cancer. After a year-long battle, during which she exhibited her usual strength, grace, humor and positive attitude, the outcome was not what we hoped for.
Through Fern’s Kids we would like to continue her legacy and love for children.
